Founding: 2012
A question about inclusive participation in digital transformation sparked
Mbula's creation in 2012, led by a group of South African visionaries. Today, Mbula operates from The
Innovation Hub in Persequor Park, South Africa.
Registration: 2015-2016
Amid South Africa's shift toward innovation-driven growth, the company was
founded in 2015 to support this transformation. Through innovation advisory, and the launch of incubation
and digital hubs, Mbula quickly became a catalyst for change partnering with public and private sectors to
reshape industries and drive progress.
2017-2018
Innovation Driven Economy
During innovation-driven growth, Mbula promoted inclusivity by aligning with the
UN SDGs, by providing accessible education for sign language.
Future Coding: 2017
Over 80 Deaf youth completed a year-long IT Systems Development course,
contributing to innovations that promote African Sign Languages.
Conference Participation: 2018
Future Coding trained the Deaf youth and provided access to global tech events
like the 2018 UN Telecoms Union on 5G in Durban and AfricaCom in Cape Town.
2019-2020
Amplify Technology Adoption
Y Business Technology: 2019
With the purpose of spreading awareness, education and opportunities; Mbula, in
partnership with MothoPele and YFM, launched an hour-long show.
IMS: 2019
Partnered with The Innovation Hub to create a digital tool for incubation.
REAH: 2020
A sign language dictionary app to improve daily vocabulary. In response to
COVID-19, launched REAH C9, a virtual sign language interpreters.
2021-Today
New Innovations REAH
The REAH sign language e-learning platform was first adopted by schools for the
Deaf in Soweto and Soshanguve to support Deaf education. Recognizing the need for greater inclusivity in
the financial sector, Mbula also developed the REAH ATM to make banking services accessible to the Deaf
community.
Awards
Start-up award: 2023 Voted one of the top events in Africa for start-ups Sentech
Africa Week honored Mbula with the Start-up award in 2023.
